There is plenty of text, songs and video out there about Jesus these days. I want to challenge you to think about the following quotes of Jesus: “EVERY MAN IS A BORN SINNER; HAVE NO CONFIDENCE IN THE FLESH; RELY NOT ON HUMAN UDERSTANDING BUT ON THE WORDS OF GOD; DO NOT BE CONFORMED TO THE WORLD; DENY YOURSELF, TAKE UP YOUR CROSS AND FOLLOW AFTER ME.” Those quotes are from the Bible.
Some people who’ve read the Bible say what’s in the Bible is not conducive to modern living. I agree. Jesus wasn’t born to have a life of luxury or comfort. He showed by his example what it’s like to live for God. How else do you interpret his saying “DENY YOURSELF TAKE UP YOUR CROSS AND FOLLOW AFTER ME.”
He is saying do not be satisfied or complacent in your current situation and follow in his footstep to your own crucifixion. That’s the price of going to heaven on Judgment Day. That’s a fair price if you ask me. After all, it’s for all eternity; either you’ll end up in heaven to live there forever or you’ll end up in hell to burn forever. As far as the story of Jesus goes, life here on earth is not an end in itself. According to the Bible, what we do and how we do them will determine where we will end up on Judgment Day.
Do you say that that is extreme? Yes, it is. Why was Jesus crucified? The Bible also quotes Jesus as saying “EITHER YOU’RE WITH ME OR AGAINST ME.” That’s pretty divisive, don’t you think? Jesus is no Santa Claus. That a born sinner can have a chance of being saved, of going to heaven on Judgment Day, that’s what Jesus paid the price for. It’s not free.
There is no such thing as free. Yes, Jesus did say “ONLY THE TRUTH SHALL SET YOU FREE.” He also said “I AM THE WAY AND THE TRUTH AND THE LIFE.” Do you believe that you are a born sinner, that you nee to be freed from your own sinful nature by way of Jesus and follow him on the path that leads to heaven? What do you believe?
