One day my friend Aadarsh had to study for his finals, but he was caught up in the newest filter on Snapchat, when he posted it many people didn’t like it and as time went on he got depression, due to the hate. So when finals came, he failed, and everything went down from there. Would you want that to happen to your children or even yourself? Hopefully not. These are the reasons why social media is harmful to young minds. It causes bad grades due to over usage, cause body image problems, plus it is also being used to express violence, and it causes different mental illnesses.
To start off with, social media is a negative platform for kids to be on and due to excessive use it is starting to harm their grades and social media is causing many teens and young adults to start having body image problems from seeing many pictures of the “perfect body.” To add on to my point, the article, “ Facebook Launches Parent Control Messenger App For Kids,” by Barbara Ortutay, shows that due to over usage teens who, “ ….. Get hooked on such forms of social media find it hard to spend much time away from it. so their school work suffers.” This shows, that kids on to social media, get lower grades due to lower attention spans, showing that it is harmful to their minds. Furthermore, according to, “ Negative, Positive Effects of Excessive Social Media Used On Teens Studied,” by Baltimore Sun, shows that social media is a negative thing for kids through a recent study by, “ ….. The London Royal Society for Public Health suggests that Instagram and Snapchat are the most likely to cause body image problems among teens. Young women, in particular, are bombarded with images of the perfect bodies. Many of those images are digitally edited to mask people’s flaws and imperfections. Teenagers are already self-conscious and easily affected by what others say, said Dr. Pate.” These two pieces of evidence explain, that kids who are on social media for most of the day get lower grades and get self-conscious seeing other better bodies.
Even though Facebook was made for good use to communicate it is still being used for violence and crime. For example, according to the article, “ Facebook Launches Parent Controlled Messenger App For Kids,” by Barbara Ortutay, the Facebook live made the feature, “ …. With the best intentions,’ it is not how people use it.” This shows, that even though the feature was used for best intentions, it is not using that way. To express my point further, the Facebook live feature was a great way to communicate, but it is being used in negative ways “….it has allowed people to stream crimes and violent acts.” As you can see, social media is a horrible thing because it allows people to stream violent crimes.
To wrap up, social media apps are terrible apps for kids because it causes different mental illnesses. Mental illnesses are serious problems and could negatively affect your emotions and behaviors. According to, “ Social Media Can Be Both Bummer And Boon The Brain,” by Kaiser Health News, mental illnesses come in a range of, “ mental health conditions, which are disorders that affect your mood, thought, and behavior.” This shows social media is bad because it causes mental illnesses toward behavior, emotions, and thought. Mental illnesses like depression make it harder to become happy. To add on, according to, “ Negative, Positive Effects Of Excessive Social Media Use On Teens Studied,” mental illnesses like depression is, “ ….more serious than sadness. It can feel like an inability to be happy.” These show, that social media is unsuitable for kids because it causes mental health problems like depression, which will make it harder to become happy.
In conclusion, I believe social media is a harmful thing for kids because it causes mental illnesses and could cause different mental illnesses, and kids could start having self-body image problems. To add on, as mentioned in the introduction, when Aadarsh stopped using social media, he was able to get an A on his makeup finals, and got help with his depression, and had a better life. So this shows that social media is awful and it is harmful to young people and their minds.
